Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg Introduces

Low Dose CT Lung Scan

Screening Program to Detect Lung Cancer

October 4, 2011 - If lung cancer is detected and treated in the earliest stage, survival rates may reach 70 percent.  However, lung cancer can grow undetected for years before symptoms surface.  Luckily, MWHC’s new Lung Scan can identify lung cancer six times earlier than a conventional chest x-ray.

The scan takes about 10 minutes to complete, and hundreds of images of the chest are taken every few seconds during the scan.  The test is completely painless, effortless and safe.  The low dose of radiation is comparable to living in Denver for a year and being exposed to the natural background radiation found there.

Who should consider a Lung Scan:

  • Those  55 to 75 years of age
  • Have a 30 pack-year smoking history (pack-years = packs per day x years smoked)
  • No prior cancer diagnosis in the past 5 years (other than basal cell skin cancer)
  • No treated pneumonia in the past three months.

To find out if a Low Dose Lung Scan is right for you call the CT Screenings Coordinator at 540.741.7644 or call 540.741-XRAY (9729) to schedule an appointment.  No physician referral is necessary.

Lung Scan is a part of Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg’s Screening Program that includes CT scans that also screen for heart disease and colon cancer.  Learn more at www.mifimaging.com.
